COMMISSIONING

To discuss a potential commission,
please contact me and I will be in touch.

Below is the step-by-step process which will help lead you through the usual process.
I work from photographs, life when possible, and instinct.

Firstly, we meet up informally over a coffee to discuss what one has in mind. Scale, which is related to price and the placement of the painting. Timing, any particular deadline? A formal or informal painting? Full length, head and shoulders? Is the background important? This all gives me a sense of what is required, what may work best for the client and an initial 'feel' of an outcome.

A first sitting is arranged in the location desired by the client for the painting. At this stage, I will take compositional photographs in different poses, relaxed or formal as required. This is then followed by some quick sketching to help get a deeper feel of the sitter. 1 to 2 hours.

From the information gathered, I go away and work up potential compositional ideas in my studio.
Light effects, colour palette and mood become apparent. Another photographic session may then be required but not always.

A second sitting is arranged in my studio. The painting gets underway, the sitter's presence feeding into the feel of the painting in a manner not achievable from photographs alone. 1 to 2 hours. In the absence of the sitter, I work on, leaning on the photographic material until a third sitting.

In the third sitting I refine the painting. With the help of the sitter's presence, the style and application of paint takes on gestural significance. 1 to 2 hours.

I work on until I feel the painting has gone as far as it needs to be finished. Another sitting may be required but again not always.
This may take up to a month depending on size and background. If required, any amendments take place.

I can offer hand-finished framing if required.
The finished artwork is then delivered.

My price list is available on request.
